Tuna & Sardine Pate

General

Ingredients

  • 1 can (5 oz) tuna in water, drained
  • 1 can (3.75 oz) sardines in water, drained, with bones
  • 1/4 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1/4 cup steamed carrots, finely mashed
  • 1 large egg, hard-boiled and mashed
  • 1 tsp sunflower oil
  • 1/2 tsp brewer's yeast (optional, for B vitamins)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Drain tuna and sardines thoroughly, reserving a small amount of liquid to adjust texture if needed.
  2. Cook brown rice according to package instructions and let cool.
  3. Steam carrots until soft, then mash or blend finely.
  4. Hard-boil the egg, peel, and mash completely.
  5. In a food processor or mixing bowl, combine tuna, sardines (with bones), cooked rice, mashed carrots, and mashed egg.
  6. Add sunflower oil and optional brewer's yeast.
  7. Blend or mix thoroughly until a smooth pate consistency is achieved. Add reserved fish liquid if too thick.
  8. Serve immediately or store properly (see safety guidelines).

💊 Required Supplements

Add 100 mg taurine powder and 1000 IU vitamin E (as dl-alpha tocopherol) per 1 cup of finished food. Also add 1/4 tsp calcium carbonate (if sardines without bones are used, but not needed here since bones are included). Always use a complete feline vitamin-mineral supplement formulated for homemade diets if feeding long-term—consult your veterinarian.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze in portion-sized containers for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving. Always wash hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly after handling raw or cooked pet food.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute tuna or sardines with other fish frequently—rotate protein sources weekly to avoid mercury buildup and nutrient imbalances. Never use tuna in oil or with added salt. Avoid long-term feeding of fish-only diets due to potential thiamine deficiency and thyroid disruption.
