Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 200g chicken liver, cooked and chopped
  • 100g chicken breast, cooked and shredded
  • 2 large eggs, hard-boiled and mashed
  • 50g canned sardines in water (drained)
  • 30g steamed broccoli, finely chopped
  • 20g cooked pumpkin puree (plain, no spices)
  • 10ml fish oil (salmon or sardine oil)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the chicken liver for 10-12 minutes until fully cooked through with no pink remaining.
  2. In a separate pot, poach the chicken breast in simmering water for 15-18 minutes until internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F).
  3. Boil the eggs for 10 minutes, then cool in ice water, peel, and mash thoroughly with a fork.
  4. Steam the broccoli florets for 5-6 minutes until very tender, then finely chop or puree.
  5. Drain the canned sardines and mash them with a fork, removing any large bones if present.
  6. Steam or microwave the pumpkin until soft, then mash into a smooth puree.
  7. Combine all prepared ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix thoroughly until evenly distributed.
  8. Add the fish oil and fold into the mixture to ensure even distribution.
  9. Allow the food to cool to room temperature before serving.
  10. Divide into individual portions based on your cat's daily caloric needs.

💊 Required Supplements

Add per 500g of prepared food: Taurine 500mg, Vitamin E 100 IU (as d-alpha-tocopherol), Zinc methionine 25mg, Biotin 5mg. Mix supplements thoroughly into the food immediately before serving. Do not add supplements during cooking as heat degrades potency. Consult your veterinarian before adjusting any supplement dosages.

This recipe is high in animal-based protein and fat appropriate for obligate carnivores. The chicken liver provides vitamin A, iron, and B-vitamins essential for skin health. Eggs deliver biotin and complete amino acids for coat quality. Sardines and fish oil supply EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids that reduce skin inflammation and promote a glossy coat. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is slightly below ideal at 0.7:1 due to the liver content; supplementation with calcium carbonate 200mg per 500g of food is recommended to achieve the target 1.1:1 ratio. Pumpkin provides soluble fiber for digestive health. This recipe meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult cat maintenance when supplements are added as directed. Not suitable for cats with liver disease, gout, or hypervitaminosis A without veterinary modification.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store fresh portions in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in ice cube trays for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always serve at room temperature or slightly warmed. Wash all surfaces and utensils with hot soapy water after preparation. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 30 minutes.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute chicken liver with other organ meats without adjusting vitamin A levels, as liver is extremely high in retinol which can cause toxicity in excess. Avoid replacing sardines with tuna due to mercury concerns and lower omega-3 content. Never use raw eggs due to avidin interference with biotin absorption and salmonella risk. Pumpkin substitutes like squash are acceptable in equal amounts. Do not add salt, onion, garlic, or any seasoning as these are toxic to cats.
