Chicken Liver & Egg Mix

Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken liver (raw, trimmed of fat)
  • 4 large eggs (whole, including shells for calcium)
  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons sardines in water (drained, no salt added)
  • 1 tablespoon salmon oil
  • 1/2 cup cooked pumpkin (plain, no spices)
  • 1/4 cup water or low-sodium chicken broth

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse chicken liver and thighs thoroughly under cold water; pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  3. Add chicken thighs to the simmering water and poach for 15-20 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  4. In the last 5 minutes of poaching, add chicken liver to the pot and cook until no longer pink inside.
  5. Remove chicken thighs and liver from water; reserve 1/4 cup of the cooking liquid.
  6. Allow meats to cool to room temperature, then dice into small bite-sized pieces.
  7. Hard-boil 3 of the 4 eggs: place in cold water, bring to boil, then simmer 12 minutes; cool, peel, and chop.
  8. Save 1 raw egg to mix in at the end for added biotin and fat content.
  9. Rinse eggshells thoroughly, bake at 250°F (120°C) for 10 minutes to sterilize, then grind to a fine powder using a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle.
  10. In a large mixing bowl, combine diced chicken thighs, liver, chopped hard-boiled eggs, and drained sardines.
  11. Add cooked pumpkin, salmon oil, and reserved cooking liquid; mix thoroughly.
  12. Crack the raw egg over the mixture and stir until evenly distributed.
  13. Add 1 teaspoon of the ground eggshell powder to the mixture and stir well.
  14. Divide into daily portions and store as directed below.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per batch (yields approximately 6-7 days for a 10 lb cat): Taurine powder 1000mg total (approximately 150-170mg per day); Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 100 IU total; Zinc methionine 75mg total; Biotin 5mg total. Mix supplements thoroughly into the food immediately before serving or distribute evenly across all portions. Do not add supplements to the entire batch at once if storing for more than 2 days to preserve potency.

This recipe provides species-appropriate high-moisture, high-protein nutrition with a macronutrient profile suited for obligate carnivores. The chicken liver delivers bioavailable vitamin A, B12, iron, and copper for coat pigmentation and skin integrity. Eggs contribute biotin and complete amino acids essential for fur quality, while sardines and salmon oil supply preformed EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids that reduce skin inflammation and support a glossy coat. Pumpkin provides soluble fiber for digestive health. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1 falls within the safe range of 1:1 to 2:1 recommended for adult cats. This recipe is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding; long-term exclusive use requires veterinary nutritionist oversight to ensure complete micronutrient adequacy.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate fresh portions in airtight glass containers for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in silicone molds or ice cube trays for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in refrigerator only. Never leave raw or cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Wash all surfaces, utensils, and hands with hot soapy water after handling raw ingredients. Discard any food that smells off or shows signs of spoilage.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute chicken liver with beef liver without adjusting vitamin A intake, as beef liver contains significantly more retinol and may cause toxicity over time. Do not replace salmon oil with vegetable oils like canola or olive oil, as cats cannot efficiently convert plant-based omega-3s (ALA) to the EPA and DHA needed for skin health. Eggshell powder must not be replaced with bone meal or calcium carbonate without veterinary guidance to maintain proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratios. Avoid adding onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, or any seasoned ingredients as these are toxic to cats.
