Chicken Liver & Egg Mix

Skin & Coat

Ingredients

  • 200g chicken breast, boneless and skinless
  • 100g chicken liver, rinsed and trimmed
  • 2 large whole eggs
  • 50g chicken heart
  • 30g canned sardines in water (no salt added), drained
  • 20g steamed broccoli, finely chopped
  • 15g pumpkin puree (plain, no spices)
  • 5ml sunflower oil
  • 50ml water or low-sodium chicken broth

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Steam the chicken breast and chicken heart until fully cooked (internal temperature 165°F/74°C), approximately 15 minutes.
  2. Steam the chicken liver for 8-10 minutes until no longer pink inside; do not overcook to preserve nutrients.
  3. Hard-boil both eggs for 10 minutes, cool under cold water, then peel and chop the whites and yolks.
  4. Steam the broccoli florets until tender, about 5 minutes, then finely chop into small, cat-bite-sized pieces.
  5. Combine the cooked chicken breast, chicken liver, chicken heart, and eggs in a food processor or blender.
  6. Add the sardines, pumpkin puree, chopped broccoli, sunflower oil, and water or broth to the processor.
  7. Blend to your cat's preferred consistency — smooth pâté or slightly chunky. Scrape down sides as needed.
  8. Allow the mixture to cool completely to room temperature before serving.
  9. Portion into daily servings and store immediately.

This recipe is high in animal-based protein (48% DM) with moderate fat (25% DM) from whole food sources rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from sardines and eggs, supporting skin barrier function and coat sheen. The chicken liver provides bioavailable vitamin A and B-complex vitamins, while the added taurine, zinc, vitamin E, and iodine supplements address common gaps in homemade feline diets. Fat content is slightly above maintenance minimums to enhance coat quality. Calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is near the recommended 1:1 to 1.5:1 range. This recipe is not complete and balanced as a sole diet long-term without a comprehensive feline vitamin-mineral premix; rotate with other recipes or use under veterinary nutritionist guidance for exclusive feeding.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate portions in airtight glass or BPA-free containers for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in ice cube trays for up to 2 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Never leave prepared food at room temperature for more than 30 minutes. Always wash hands, utensils, and surfaces before and after handling raw poultry and eggs. Discard any uneaten food after your cat finishes eating. Consult your veterinarian before introducing this recipe, especially if your cat has liver conditions, as liver content is higher than typical commercial diets.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute chicken liver with beef or pork liver without adjusting quantities, as vitamin A levels differ significantly and excess vitamin A is toxic to cats. Do not replace sardines with tuna or salmon due to mercury concerns and different omega-3 profiles. Do not omit taurine — it is essential for cats and cannot be sufficiently obtained from the base ingredients alone. Do not use onion, garlic, chives, or any Allium-family vegetables as they are toxic to cats. Do not add salt, butter, milk, or any seasoning.
