Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs (diced)
  • 1 lb beef liver (chopped)
  • 1 lb sardines in water (drained, bones included for calcium)
  • 2 cups butternut squash (peeled and cubed)
  • 1 cup green beans (chopped)
  • 1 cup spinach (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseed
  • 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 4 cups low-sodium bone broth
  • 2 large eggs (hard-boiled, chopped)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add diced chicken thighs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add chopped beef liver to the pot and cook for 3-4 minutes until lightly seared.
  3. Pour in bone broth and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low and add cubed butternut squash.
  4. Simmer uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until squash is tender.
  5. Add chopped green beans and continue simmering for 10 more minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in drained sardines, ground flaxseed, and turmeric powder. Mix thoroughly to break up sardines.
  7. Allow stew to cool to room temperature, then fold in chopped spinach, blueberries, and hard-boiled eggs.
  8. Portion into airtight containers and refrigerate immediately. Serve at room temperature.

This recipe provides 520 kcal per 1.5 cup serving, appropriate for a moderately active 25lb senior dog. High-quality protein from chicken, liver, and sardines supports muscle maintenance in aging dogs. Omega-3 fatty acids from sardines and flaxseed, combined with turmeric's curcumin, provide natural anti-inflammatory support for joint health. The 1.4:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio meets senior dog requirements. Added glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM provide therapeutic joint support. Low carbohydrate content helps maintain healthy weight in less active seniors. Consult your veterinarian before starting any homemade diet, especially for dogs with kidney or liver conditions.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate in airtight glass or BPA-free containers for up to 5 days. Freeze individual portions in silicone molds for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in refrigerator. Never microwave; gently warm by placing sealed container in warm water. Always wash hands and surfaces after handling raw meat. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute chicken thighs with lean chicken breast as fat content is essential for senior dogs. Avoid replacing sardines with tuna due to mercury concerns. Do not omit turmeric or reduce dosage as it provides critical anti-inflammatory benefits. Never use onion, garlic, grapes, or raisins as substitutes for listed vegetables and fruits. Do not replace bone broth with regular broth as sodium levels may be dangerously high.
