Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef stew meat (lean, cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 8 oz chicken breast (boneless, skinless, diced)
  • 1 lb sardines (fresh or canned in water, bones included)
  • 2 cups sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
  • 2 cups butternut squash (peeled and cubed)
  • 1 cup green beans (chopped)
  • 1 cup spinach (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1.5 liters homemade bone broth (beef or chicken, low sodium)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 2 eggs (whole, lightly beaten)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large stockpot, heat coconut oil over medium heat and brown the beef stew meat for 5-7 minutes until seared on all sides, then set aside.
  2. In the same pot, add the bone broth and bring to a gentle simmer, then return the beef and add chicken breast, allowing to cook on low heat for 45 minutes.
  3. Add the sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and rolled oats to the pot, stirring well, and continue simmering for an additional 25 minutes until vegetables are fork-tender.
  4. Gently fold in the green beans, spinach, diced sardines (including soft bones for calcium), and beaten eggs, stirring continuously for 5 minutes to cook the eggs through and break apart the fish.
  5. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely to room temperature before portioning into airtight containers.

This recipe provides 38% protein on a dry matter basis to maintain muscle mass in aging dogs while limiting phosphorus to 0.85% DM for kidney protection. The 1.3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio supports bone health without over-supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids from sardines and fish oil target inflammatory joint pathways, while the glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM combination provides building blocks for cartilage repair. The moderate calorie density (485 kcal per serving) helps prevent obesity, a primary aggravator of joint disease in senior dogs.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate portions in airtight glass containers for up to 4 days, or freeze in individual serving portions for up to 3 months. Always thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Reheat gently on the stove or microwave until lukewarm (not hot) before serving. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Consult your veterinarian before introducing this recipe, especially if your dog is on medications or has kidney disease due to the phosphorus content from sardine bones.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute sardines with tuna or swordfish due to high mercury content in senior dogs. Do NOT replace bone broth with commercial stock cubes as these contain toxic onion/garlic powder and excessive sodium. Avoid substituting sweet potatoes with white potatoes (nightshade sensitivity in some seniors). Do not omit the black pepper extract as it increases turmeric bioavailability by 2000%.
