Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs beef chuck roast, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 lb chicken thighs, boneless and skinless, chopped
  • 2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup sweet potato, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup green beans, trimmed and chopped
  • 1 cup chopped spinach
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup ground flaxseed
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 6 cups low-sodium bone broth (beef or chicken)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (to enhance turmeric absorption)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Heat coconut oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat.
  2. Brown the beef cubes on all sides, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pot, lightly sear the chicken pieces for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside with the beef.
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Add bone broth and apple cider vinegar, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  5. Return the beef and chicken to the pot. Add butternut squash and sweet potato.
  6. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
  7. Add green beans and continue simmering for 15 minutes until vegetables are tender.
  8. Stir in spinach, blueberries, ground flaxseed, turmeric, and black pepper. Cook uncovered for 5 minutes until spinach wilts.
  9. Remove from heat and allow the stew to cool completely before serving.
  10. Portion into airtight containers. Refrigerate for immediate use or freeze for longer storage.

💊 Required Supplements

Add the following per 2-cup serving of the prepared stew: 1000 mg glucosamine HCl, 800 mg chondroitin sulfate, 500 mg MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), and 1000 mg fish oil (providing approximately 300 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA). Mix supplements thoroughly into the cooled stew immediately before serving. Do not add supplements during cooking as heat degrades efficacy.

This recipe provides a moderate-calorie density suitable for less active senior dogs, with a protein-to-fat ratio designed to preserve lean body mass while supporting joint tissue repair. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is approximately 3:1, which is anti-inflammatory and beneficial for arthritic joints. Joint-supporting supplements (glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM) are dosed at clinically studied levels. Turmeric with black pepper provides natural anti-inflammatory support. The calcium-phosphorus ratio is appropriate for senior dogs, though dogs with chronic kidney disease should have phosphorus levels evaluated by a veterinarian. This recipe is not complete and balanced on its own — the specified supplements are essential. Consult your veterinarian to confirm this recipe is appropriate for your dog's specific health conditions.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store refrigerated portions in airtight glass or BPA-free containers for up to 4 days. Freeze individual portions in silicone muffin molds or freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator — never microwave, as this creates hot spots and destroys nutrients. Always serve at room temperature or slightly warm. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after handling raw meat. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Transition your dog gradually over 7-10 days, starting with 25% new food mixed with 75% current food.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute beef with leaner cuts like sirloin, as senior dogs need moderate fat for caloric density and coat health. Avoid replacing sweet potato with white potato, which has a higher glycemic index. Never omit the black pepper — it contains piperine, which increases curcumin bioavailability by up to 2000%. Do not use regular broth with onion or garlic powder, as these are toxic to dogs. Do not substitute flaxseed with whole seeds, as they pass through undigested; ground form is essential for omega-3 absorption. Consult your veterinarian before making any ingredient changes, as this recipe is specifically balanced for senior dogs with joint concerns.
