Senior Joint Support Stew

Joint Health

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs chicken thighs (boneless, skinless, cubed)
  • 1 lb beef stew meat (lean, cubed)
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 sweet potatoes (medium, peeled and diced)
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup green beans (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 4 cups low-sodium bone broth (homemade or store-bought, onion-free)
  • 1/4 cup turmeric root (fresh, grated, OR 1 tablespoon ground turmeric)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger (grated)
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley (chopped)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot, heat coconut oil over medium heat.
  2. Add cubed chicken thighs and beef stew meat. Brown on all sides for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in bone broth and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 30 minutes.
  4. Add brown rice, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Stir to combine. Cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes until rice is tender and vegetables are soft.
  5. Stir in green beans, grated turmeric, and grated ginger. Cook uncovered for 10 more minutes to allow some liquid to reduce.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool to lukewarm temperature (approximately 30 minutes).
  7. Fold in blueberries and fresh parsley just before serving to preserve nutrients.
  8. Portion into individual meal containers. Allow to reach room temperature before serving to your dog.

This recipe provides a balanced calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1, ideal for senior dogs with potential kidney concerns. The 38% protein on a dry matter basis supports muscle maintenance without excessive strain on aging kidneys. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and anti-inflammatory compounds from turmeric and ginger work synergistically to support joint mobility. The 70% moisture content aids hydration in senior dogs who may not drink enough water. Brown rice and sweet potatoes provide easily digestible complex carbohydrates for sustained energy. Blueberries contribute antioxidants to support cognitive function in aging dogs. This recipe is not complete and balanced on its own—the specified supplements are essential for meeting senior dog nutritional requirements, and regular veterinary bloodwork monitoring is recommended.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight glass containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze individual portions in BPA-free containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat or microwave briefly, stirring well and testing temperature before serving. Always use clean utensils when handling. Discard any food left uneaten after 2 hours. Wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly after preparation.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute onions, garlic, grapes, or raisins—these are toxic to dogs. Do not replace bone broth with regular broth containing onion powder. Avoid substituting sweet potatoes with regular white potatoes (nightshade sensitivity in some seniors). Turmeric dosage should not exceed recommended amounts without veterinary guidance, as it can interact with blood thinners. Do not use macadamia nut oil instead of coconut oil. If your dog has kidney disease, reduce protein sources and consult your veterinarian before using this recipe.
