Tuna & Sardine Pate

General

Ingredients

  • 200g canned tuna in water (drained, no salt added)
  • 100g canned sardines in water (drained, no salt added)
  • 1 large egg yolk (cooked)
  • 30g chicken liver (cooked and finely chopped)
  • 20g pumpkin purée (plain, no spices)
  • 10g salmon oil
  • 50ml low-sodium chicken broth
  • 15g cooked white rice

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken liver thoroughly by boiling or steaming until no pink remains, then finely chop or mince.
  2. Hard-boil the egg, remove the shell, and separate the yolk from the white; use only the yolk.
  3. Drain the canned tuna and sardines thoroughly to remove excess sodium.
  4. Combine the tuna, sardines, chicken liver, egg yolk, pumpkin purée, rice, and chicken broth in a bowl.
  5. Blend or mash the mixture until it reaches a smooth, pâté-like consistency.
  6. Stir in the salmon oil until fully incorporated.
  7. Divide meal-sized portions into airtight containers and refrigerate immediately.
  8. Warm refrigerated portions slightly before serving to enhance aroma and palatability.

This recipe provides high-quality animal protein from multiple fish sources and chicken liver, delivering essential amino acids including taurine when supplemented. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.4:1 meets feline requirements (ideal range 1.1:1 to 1.5:1). Omega-3 fatty acids from sardines and salmon oil support anti-inflammatory processes and skin health. Carbohydrate content is kept low to reflect obligate carnivore metabolism. Vitamin E is added to prevent oxidation of polyunsaturated fats. This recipe is not complete and balanced on its own and requires the specified supplements to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult cat maintenance.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Never use tuna packed in oil, brine, or with added salt or flavorings. Discard any uneaten food left out for more than 2 hours. Always use fresh, human-grade ingredients and wash hands and surfaces thoroughly before and after preparation.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute tuna with raw fish due to parasite risk and thiaminase content that destroys vitamin B1. Do not replace salmon oil with plant-based oils as cats cannot efficiently convert ALA to EPA/DHA. Avoid adding onions, garlic, chives, or any Allium species as these are toxic to cats. Do not omit taurine supplementation as deficiency causes blindness and heart failure in cats. Do not use dog-formulated supplements as they lack adequate taurine for feline requirements.
