Puppy Growth Formula

General

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground chicken (85% lean)
  • 1 cup brown rice (uncooked)
  • 1/2 cup sweet potato, diced
  • 1/2 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1/4 cup carrots, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp fish oil (salmon or sardine source)
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cook brown rice in chicken broth according to package directions, approximately 45 minutes, until tender and liquid is absorbed.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground chicken over medium heat, breaking into small crumbles, about 8-10 minutes until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  3. Steam sweet potato, green beans, and carrots until fork-tender, approximately 10-12 minutes. Mash sweet potato lightly.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine cooked rice, ground chicken, steamed vegetables, and beaten egg. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Add ground flaxseed and fish oil to the mixture, stirring until evenly distributed.
  6. Allow to cool completely to room temperature before portioning.
  7. Divide into individual portions based on puppy's weight and refrigerate or freeze as needed.

💊 Required Supplements

Per 5 lbs of prepared food: 1/4 teaspoon calcium carbonate powder (provides ~500mg calcium), 1/8 teaspoon zinc methionine (provides ~15mg zinc), 250 IU vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols), and a canine-specific vitamin B-complex at manufacturer's recommended dosage for puppies. Consult your veterinarian to adjust based on your puppy's specific weight and breed size.

This formula provides nutrient-dense calories appropriate for growing puppies with a protein-to-energy ratio supporting lean tissue development. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.4:1 is optimized for skeletal growth. DHA from fish oil supports cognitive and visual development. Note that homemade diets should be reviewed by a veterinary nutritionist every 3-4 months during the rapid growth phase to ensure adequacy for your specific puppy's breed, size, and development rate.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store refrigerated portions in airtight containers for up to 4 days. Freeze individual portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Always serve at room temperature or slightly warmed. Discard any uneaten food after 2 hours. Wash all preparation surfaces and utensils with hot soapy water. Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling raw ingredients.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute calcium carbonate with bone meal or eggshell powder without veterinary guidance, as bioavailability differs significantly. Avoid replacing the fish oil with plant-based omega sources as puppies require preformed DHA and EPA for brain development. Do not use onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, or xylitol-containing ingredients as these are toxic to dogs. Protein sources should not be swapped with fatty cuts without recalculating the entire nutritional profile.
