Kitten Starter Recipe
Ingredients
- 200g boneless chicken thigh, cooked and diced
- 50g chicken liver, cooked and finely chopped
- 30g chicken heart, cooked and minced
- 1 whole egg, cooked and mashed
- 20g salmon, cooked and flaked
- 15g canned sardines in water (no salt), mashed
- 30g steamed pumpkin, pureed
- 15g steamed broccoli, finely minced
- 10g hemp seeds, ground
- 5ml fish oil (salmon or sardine source)
- 5ml olive oil
- 50ml water or low-sodium chicken broth (for consistency adjustment)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer and poach the chicken thigh for 15-18 minutes until internal temperature reaches 74°C (165°F); remove and let cool before dicing into small, kitten-appropriate pieces.
- In the same pot, gently cook the chicken liver and heart for 8-10 minutes until fully cooked through with no pink remaining; finely chop or mince and set aside.
- Hard boil the egg for 9 minutes, cool under running water, peel, and mash thoroughly including the yolk.
- Steam the pumpkin and broccoli until very soft (approximately 10 minutes), then puree or mash to a smooth consistency that a young kitten can easily consume.
- Flake the cooked salmon and sardines, carefully checking for and removing any bones.
- Combine all cooked proteins (chicken, liver, heart, egg, salmon, sardines) in a large mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.
- Add the pureed vegetables, ground hemp seeds, fish oil, and olive oil to the protein mixture; stir until evenly distributed.
- Add water or broth gradually to achieve a pate-like consistency suitable for young kittens transitioning to solid food.
- Portion into daily servings using ice cube trays or small containers; each cube is approximately 25-30g.
- Refrigerate portions for immediate use (up to 3 days) or freeze for longer storage (up to 3 months).
💊 Required Supplements
Add per 500g of prepared food: 1/4 teaspoon (1.25ml) taurine powder (500mg taurine), 1/8 teaspoon (0.625ml) calcium carbonate powder (providing ~200mg calcium), 1/16 teaspoon (0.3125ml) vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols, 25 IU), 1/16 teaspoon (0.3125ml) omega-3 fish oil concentrate with vitamin D (providing ~50 IU vitamin D), and a complete feline vitamin-mineral powder formulated for kittens at the manufacturer's recommended dose per 500g food. Taurine is non-negotiable and must not be omitted as cats cannot synthesize adequate amounts endogenously.

🧊 Safety & Storage
Always cook all animal proteins to safe internal temperatures to eliminate Salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens. Never feed raw ingredients to kittens due to their immature immune systems. Refrigerate prepared food at 4°C (39°F) or below and use within 72 hours. Freeze portions at -18°C (0°F) for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator, never at room temperature. Discard any food left uneaten after 30 minutes at room temperature. Wash all surfaces, utensils, and hands thoroughly with hot soapy water after handling. Always provide fresh, clean water alongside meals. Consult your veterinarian before introducing this recipe and schedule regular weight checks to ensure proper growth trajectory.
⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning
Do not substitute plant-based proteins for animal proteins as cats are obligate carnivores requiring preformed vitamin A, arachidonic acid, and taurine found only in animal tissues. Avoid replacing liver with additional muscle meat as liver provides critical vitamin A, iron, and copper. Do not use onion, garlic, chives, or leeks in any quantity as these cause hemolytic anemia in cats. Never substitute raisins, grapes, chocolate, or xylitol-containing ingredients. Avoid cow's milk as most cats are lactose intolerant. Do not add salt, seasonings, or cooking oils containing avocado. Calcium supplementation must not be omitted or substituted with bone meal due to contamination risks; use pure calcium carbonate powder instead. Fish oil dosage must not exceed recommended amounts as excessive vitamin A and D can cause toxicity.
