Kitten Starter Recipe

General

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground chicken (cooked, drained of excess fat)
  • 1/4 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1/4 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato
  • 2 tbsp chicken liver (cooked and finely chopped)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp calcium carbonate powder
  • 1/4 tsp iodized salt
  • 1/4 tsp taurine powder
  • 1/8 tsp vitamin E powder (mixed tocopherols)
  • 1/4 tsp zinc gluconate powder
  • 1/8 tsp vitamin B complex powder
  • 1/4 cup water (for moisture)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cook the ground chicken thoroughly in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces. Drain any excess fat and set aside to cool.
  2. Cook the brown rice according to package directions until soft. Allow to cool.
  3. Boil or bake the sweet potato until tender, then mash it finely and let it cool.
  4. Cook the chicken liver in boiling water for 5 minutes, then chop it into very small pieces.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked chicken, rice, sweet potato, and chicken liver.
  6. Add the olive oil and mix well to distribute the fat evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the calcium carbonate, iodized salt, taurine, vitamin E, zinc gluconate, and vitamin B complex over the mixture. Stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution of all supplements.
  8. Add the water and mix until the desired consistency is reached. The food should be moist but not soupy.
  9. Portion into individual servings using an ice cube tray or small containers. Refrigerate portions for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

This recipe provides a high-protein, moderate-fat diet suitable for growing kittens, with a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 1.3:1 which supports proper bone development. The inclusion of taurine is essential for feline heart and eye health. The moisture content of 72% helps support hydration, which is important as cats have a naturally low thirst drive. This diet meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for kitten growth when prepared exactly as directed with all supplements included.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store fresh portions in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze individual portions in ice cube trays for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen portions in the refrigerator overnight, never at room temperature. Always wash hands and all surfaces thoroughly before and after handling raw meat. Discard any food left uneaten after 2 hours at room temperature. Consult your veterinarian before switching to this diet and schedule regular check-ups to monitor growth.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute taurine with any other ingredient, as deficiency can cause blindness and heart failure in cats. Do not replace calcium carbonate with bone meal without veterinary guidance, as improper ratios can cause skeletal deformities in growing kittens. Avoid substituting chicken liver with other organ meats without adjusting quantities, as vitamin A toxicity is a risk. Never add onion, garlic, grapes, or raisins, as these are toxic to cats.

⚕️ Always consult your veterinarian before changing your pet's diet.
