Kitten Starter Recipe

General

Ingredients

  • 800g chicken thigh (boneless, skinless, diced)
  • 200g chicken liver
  • 100g chicken hearts
  • 1 whole egg (cooked, finely chopped)
  • 50g salmon fillet (boneless, cooked and flaked)
  • 30g pumpkin purée (plain, unsweetened)
  • 20g steamed and mashed sweet potato
  • 15g sardines in water (drained, bones included)
  • 100ml low-sodium chicken broth (homemade preferred)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer and poach the chicken thighs for 20-25 minutes until fully cooked (internal temperature 165°F/74°C). Reserve the cooking liquid.
  2. In a separate pan, lightly cook the chicken liver and hearts over medium heat for 8-10 minutes until firm but slightly pink inside. Cool completely.
  3. Hard boil the egg for 9 minutes, cool under running water, peel, and finely chop including the shell (rinsed and dried) for calcium.
  4. Steam the sweet potato until very soft (about 15 minutes), then mash thoroughly. Steam the pumpkin if using fresh, or measure purée if using canned.
  5. Poach the salmon fillet in the reserved chicken broth for 5-6 minutes until flaky. Remove any remaining bones and flake finely.
  6. Drain sardines and mash with a fork, ensuring small bones are crushed.
  7. Combine all cooked proteins in a food processor. Pulse to a coarse pâté consistency appropriate for kitten texture preferences.
  8. Fold in the sweet potato, pumpkin purée, and sardine mash. Add reserved broth as needed for moisture.
  9. Divide into daily portions and store appropriately.

This recipe is formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for growth and reproduction in cats. High animal-based protein supports lean muscle development, while the 1.3:1 calcium-to-phosphorus ratio promotes proper skeletal mineralization. Taurine supplementation is essential as cats cannot synthesize adequate amounts endogenously. The inclusion of liver provides bioavailable vitamin A and folate, while sardines contribute natural calcium from edible bones and omega-3 fatty acids for neural development. Note that homemade diets should be reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist every 6 months during the growth period.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Refrigerate fresh portions in airtight glass containers for up to 3 days at 38°F (3°C). Freeze individual portions in silicone molds or ice cube trays for up to 3 months at 0°F (-18°C). Thaw frozen portions overnight in refrigerator only; never microwave. Discard any food left uneaten after 30 minutes. Wash all surfaces and utensils with hot soapy food-safe sanitizer between preparations. Use human-grade ingredients only.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do not substitute organ meats with additional muscle meat; liver and hearts provide irreplaceable micronutrients including vitamin A, B vitamins, and coenzyme Q10 critical for cardiac development. Avoid using dog-formulated supplements as they lack essential taurine. Do not add onions, garlic, chives, grapes, raisins, or xylitol in any form. Consult your veterinarian before making any ingredient changes.
