Beef & Pumpkin Stew

Digestive Health

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef (90/10)
  • 2 cups pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 cup chopped green beans
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 4 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until no pink remains, breaking into small pieces.
  2. Drain excess fat and return beef to pot.
  3. Add carrots, green beans, and celery. Sauté for 5 minutes until slightly softened.
  4. Pour in beef broth and bring to a boil.
  5. Stir in brown rice, pumpkin puree, parsley, and turmeric.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30-35 minutes until rice is tender and vegetables are soft.
  7. Remove from heat and let cool completely before serving.
  8. Portion into individual servings based on your dog's weight and caloric needs.

This recipe provides moderate protein suitable for senior dogs while maintaining adequate fiber for digestive health. The pumpkin adds soluble fiber to support gut health. Caloric density is appropriate for less active senior dogs. Note: Without the calcium supplement, calcium levels are insufficient. A complete vitamin-mineral supplement is essential for long-term feeding to prevent deficiencies.

🧊 Safety & Storage

Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze individual portions for up to 3 months. Always serve at room temperature. Discard any food left out for more than 2 hours. Wash all surfaces and utensils thoroughly after preparation.

⚠️ Recipe Drift Warning

Do NOT substitute pumpkin with pumpkin pie filling (contains toxic spices). Avoid onion, garlic, or excessive salt. Do not replace beef broth with regular broth (often contains onion/garlic). Rice substitutions (quinoa, oats) alter caloric density and require recalculation. Consult your veterinarian before making any modifications.
