Why Homemade Cat Food Needs Supplements
Cats are obligate carnivores with specific nutrient requirements. Homemade diets must include taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and calcium in proper ratios. Without supplements, deficiencies can cause serious health issues.
Essential Supplements for Cats
- Taurine: 250-500 mg per day for adult cats. Essential for heart and eye health.
- Calcium: 1,000 mg per pound of food. Use calcium carbonate or bone meal.
- Fish Oil: Provides omega-3s and arachidonic acid. 1/2 tsp per pound of food.
- Vitamin E: 100 IU per pound of food. Acts as antioxidant.
- Taurine powder (pure, no additives)
